Reverberations

Annika Schröder served as an airborne medic in Afghanistan. On Good Friday 2010, during the fiercest firefight in Bundeswehr history, she ran through Taliban fire again and again to recover the dead and wounded. When returning home, as one of the highest decorated female soldiers in German history, PTSD consumed her.

The army let her go. On a derelict farm in eastern Germany, she began to rebuild again—quietly, with goats, dogs, and a trusted neighbor. She turned the land into a refuge for other veterans and herself, building a fragile but growing network of care.

Now a rising voice in Germany’s veteran community, she prepares for her hardest step yet: returning to Afghanistan, to the battlefield that changed everything—not for closure, but for healing, and to become a symbol for those still fighting their wars in silence.
