The brutal stillness of Shanghai’s 2022 lockdown resurfaces long-buried trauma for Weina, both familial and historic. Seeking freedom, she moves to Berlin and begins rebuilding her relationship with her mother, while confronting the shadow of her troubled, deceased father. All this evokes emotional echoes of the Great Famine and Cultural Revolution as experienced by her parents.
Her mother, now in her 70s, is surprised to enter a new chapter of growth with the support of friends. Across distance, mother and daughter embark on parallel journeys, reclaiming their voices as Chinese women and reimagining freedom.
