Selfie To Freedom

Genre: Human Interest
Duration: 60 min, HD

Ziaur Rahman, like most millennials in Malaysia, loves to take selfies and is active on social media. However, he is no ordinary youth. He is a Rohingya refugee who grew up stateless in the Bangladesh refugee camp and almost died from being trafficked seven times. With the worsening prosecution against Rohingya in Myanmar, Ziaur turns to activism. Malaysia does not recognize refugee rights and thus, he faces constant struggle and discrimination. His activism takes an unlikely turn as he found an ally for his cause, the government of Malaysia. The film explores the complex politics of the refugee crisis in Southeast Asia through Ziaur’s personal journey.
