Monika Grassl is a documentary film director and editor with a background in media and journalism. After graduating from her first studies (Mediamanagement) by writing a thesis about "The nature of documentary filmmaking – dramaturgic and cinematographic elements“, she was working for several production companies in Austria and France with a focus on documentary film. From 2008 to 2015 she studied documentary filmmaking at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, Germany. During her studies she worked as a researcher for “The House of Documentary Film” in Stuttgart, Germany. In 2012 she directed the documentary WHERE TIME STOPS (German TV channel WDR). Her last feature-length documentary GIRLS DON’T FLY was shown at a range of international film festivals and won several awards. Since 2016 she has been living and working as a filmmaker and editor between Paris, France and Austria.
