Part 1: Presentation of Documentary Slots and Programme Initiatives.

Under the title „Leipzig Masters”, Discovery Campus and DOK Leipzig offer a forum to commissioners committed to the fight for creative and ambitious documentary films. At the third Forum on Innovative Non-fiction Television, international media decisionmakers from the United States and Europe will give insights into their concepts and strategies. For one afternoon, they will present new and innovative programming initiatives and documentary slots, explain attractive international funding programmes and show selected productions for which they fought especially hard.

Claire Aguilar, Vice President of Programming at ITVS, has coproduced some of the best recent international documentaries. Filmmakers from all over the world submit their projects for the ITVS International Call. Her commitment to political and critical documentaries is getting more important every year, as other international funds dry up and television networks produce fewer and fewer documentaries.

Barbara Truyen worked as a distributor for a long time and has compiled an intelligent and innovative documentary film package as Commissioning Editor of the Dutch VPRO network in the past two years. She works with Dutch and international filmmakers. Barbara Truyen will give insights into the situation of documentary film in Holland and explain how to co-operate with Dutch producers.

Margje de Koning made all sorts of documentaries for many different broadcasting companies. In 2004 Margje de Koning became a part time teacher at the Culture & Media studies (department Film& Television at the University of Amsterdam). In August 2004, Margje de Koning became Commissioning editor for a documentary slot of 52' docs. This means producing and co-producing creative single 52'-documentaries on contemporary social, social-cultural and moral issues with a strong human interest angle. As of January 2005 Margje de Koning is also responsible for the Television Department of IKON.

Hans Robert Eisenhauer (ZDF/ARTE) is responsible for the concept of the Arte “Thema am Dienstag“ (Tuesday’s topic) slot, though from different national perspectives. “Thema am Dienstag” programmes films about current political and social issues, as a rule two one-hour productions or one long documentary and a studio debate.

Cara Mertes is currently Director, Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program, overseeing the activities of the Documentary Film Program and Fund, including granting more than $1 million per year to documentarians globally, overseeing Creative Documentary Labs at Sundance Resort, supporting programming and panels at the Sundance Film Festival and the Sundance Independent Producers Conference, curating work-in-progress screenings with partner organizations and other initiatives of the DFP. In 2008, she and the DFP staff inaugurated STORIES OF CHANGE: Social Entrepreneurship in Focus Through Documentary, a $3 million, 3 year partnership between the DFP and the Skoll Foundation. The DFP also launched DocSource at www.sundance.org/docsource, a website connecting independent documentary filmmakers and human rights stakeholders worldwide.

All panelists will show excerpts of films they have coproduced. Hosted by Christoph Jörg (ARTE France).
