2nd Symposium 2002
The Non-Fiction Market in a Time of Change
International Coproductions - The Global Documentary Market between Boom and Recession
Discovery Campus, Documentary in Europe and ZeLIG school for documentary, television and new media, organized an international conference in Italy dealing with coproductions and the developments in the international non-fiction market. The event was attended by 300 European filmmakers, producers and commissioning editors. Selected coproductions helped to analyze chances and risks of cross-border collaboration. In which cases should one try to find international partners? How can one best cope with occuring problems like cultural differences or financial and legal matters? A special focus was put on strategies for independent producers from regions with a less developed documentary production who want to enter into a collaboration with broadcasters and coproducers from the bigger markets. Questions dealt with were: How can independent producers survive in a time of concentration? Do international coproductions offer the solution? Participants also got an insight into innovative company strategies of successful small to medium-sized production and distribution houses which have cleverly won their niche in the international non-fiction market. Is concentration accelerating in times of recession? Do broadcasters tend to take over the best independent production houses in Europe? Representatives of major ‘global players’ in the non-fiction sector such as Alliance Atlantis, ARTE, Discovery Channel or Mediatrade presented their objectives and were available to European documentary filmmakers for questions and networking. During two Pitching Sessions organized by Documentary in Europe selected independent producers and directors presented challenging new documentary projects to a group of international commissioning editors. The Open Training Session in the framework of the Discovery Campus Masterschool 2002 was supported by the MEDIA Plus Programme of the European Union and local, regional and national institutions in Italy and Germany. It was organized in partnership with the European Documentary Network (EDN) and the Italian documentary association doc/it.
