International Factual Co-Production: 2012 and Beyond – Are you ready?

What are the demands of the int. co-production market as we go into 2013?
What is the current state of the global factual environment?
What are broadcasters looking for from factual programming?
Who is looking for stories and talent from this region and what are they looking for?

This weekend is for anyone who wishes to learn more about and to work in the international factual and documentary market.

While Saturday is devoted to workshops focussing on practical and creative skills, Sunday will be dedicated to wide ranging panels and thought provoking Q and A sessions on the key players in documentary broadcasting in Western and Eastern Europe.

Out of the 4 workshops we’re presenting to you on Saturday, you can choose
- one you would like to attend on Saturday Morning and
- a second one you would like to attend on Saturday afternoon.

The 4 workshops will run parallel on Saturday morning and will be repeated for a new set of participants after lunch. Seats will be given on a first come, first serve basis. However, we try to accommodate your preferences in the best possible way. Register here & sign in for the workshops

Industry Session Bucharest

Learn first-hand how to develop your skills and knowledge from people who are operating in these markets on a daily basis.

WORKSHOP 1: What else does it do? - Developing and creating ideas for multiple platforms.
- Kate Quilton, Channel 4, UK
International broadcasters are demanding that ideas are no longer commissioned just for the TV screen and your programme needs to address this, where do you start? A creative brainstorm about how one takes a TV idea and develops it for outside the TV. Channel 4 is universally acknowledged as one of the leading broadcasters in pushing the boundaries of multiplatform commissioning and broadcasting. Kate Quilton is one of a team of commissioning editors for multiplatform programmes there and has worked across a number of differing projects in this fast moving area. This is not about the technology but what are the challenges and freedoms multiplatform programming brings to creativity.

PREPARATION: Participants will need to bring at least one idea in development -can be very early development – for a programme or film idea that can be used in the workshop to brainstorm and develop multiplatform applications.

WORKSHOP 2: In episode 2....and then what happens? –Developing Series and Formats from a Single Idea
- Elizabeth McIntyre, Discovery International, UK
Commissioning series and formats have become the norm for the majority of broadcasters in recent years; many no longer commission the single one off documentary. How do you develop an idea into a series or a format for use in many territories?
The goal of this workshop is to work with participants to brainstorm ideas for series and formats. It will focus on some of the key Discovery genres, namely adventure and endurance, engineering content, popular science and car programming. How do you decide whether the idea is strong enough to go beyond the hour and how do you tackle creatively the challenges this throws up. Liz McIntyre is head production and development for factual programming for Discovery networks international. She has produced hundreds of hours of programming both series, formats and one offs for discovery. She comes from a production background originally.

PREPARATION: Before the workshop, can you bring along some materials that have interested you and that you think might help in a brainstorm either for yourself or to stimulate the group. Please bring with you newspaper and magazine cuttings, YouTube links or DVDs or cuttings, or just list, your favourite formatted TV shows – whatever the genre, not necessarily from the genres listed above, (Adventure / Endurance / Cars / Engineering & Pop Science) as you will be talking about how all programme formats are useful to be inspired by. Also think about examples of new on screen talent. You will be given access to a screening room with some relevant programmes to view ahead of the workshop.

WORKSHOP 3: Pret a porter or haute couture? - Reversioning and repackaging for international broadcasters.
- Edwina Cooper, Senior Producer Discovery Networks
Whether as part of the production process or applied to a finished film, how can you tailor your film to the varying needs of multiple broadcasters and multiple sales, how do you make your film fit a theatrical release and the needs of a commercial slot time of less than 50 minutes? How can you make your finished film more international in its audience appeal or tailored to a specific audience? What is meant by versioning and repackaging and what the most creative and economical way to do it? Edwina is an expert in all forms of versioning for TV. In this workshop she will show a number of different techniques for creating different versions of the same show with real examples from her case book.

PREPARATION: if you have a specific programme or versioning example you wish to work on please bring it along to the workshop. It will need to be at least at a shooting script stage not just a one page treatment and of course any visuals or trailers you might have. For those of you who don’t have anything specific to work on, examples of programmes to be reversioned or repackaged will be provided.

WORKSHOP 4: Fact or Fiction? The how and when to produce Hybrid Documentaries
- Joanne Reay, Terra Mater, Austria
Fact is often stranger than fiction and for this reason, many documentaries have told tales with a narrative so incredible, it feels like something dreamed up by Hollywood. But now there is a new move to blur the line between documentary and feature film even further, with factual films increasingly looking to dramatization to tell parts of the story. Actors and real participants find themselves shoulder to shoulder within one story. But what does this mean for the reputation of documentaries as being "real"? What are the dangers of "dramatic license" undermining the audiences’ faith that documentaries "tell it as it is?" The workshop will look at the benefits of using dramatization as a documentary tool and explore the impact that this "hybrid" trend may have on documentary making as a whole.

PREPARATION: There is no preparation required for this workshop.
