Crossing Borders III - 2001

Reaching your Audience

Distribution and Marketing of international documentary films for television and cinema

The event provided a forum for intensive examination of issues concerning the distribution and marketing of documentaries for an international audience. Some of the most experienced professionals in the field of European television and cinema distribution gave an insight into issues such as: how can documentaries best be marketed; which subjects are in demand; how do decision-makers in television conduct their programme-planning; how to go about finding the best distribution company for one’s film, and what to look out for while working together. Case studies were used to present successful distribution strategies and to analyse international presales. Together with the Haus des Dokumentarfilms, the Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg (MFG), the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg and the Council of Ludwigsburg, DISCOVERY CAMPUS helped documentary film-makers to gain an insight into the massively changing international non-fiction market, taking into account the significant role now played by the distribution companies in the production and financing of these programmes.
