1st Symposium 2010
MY MONEY, MY FILM
Join us for the 2010 kick-off in Graz, Austria and learn more about where to get your money from when it comes to alternative financing models. Throughout the weekend, Documentary Campus will present exciting panels and case studies with a range of leading European and American experts discussing the changing funding landscape, the new possibilities which arise thereof and how to make use of them. The event takes place in the Literaturhaus Graz on 20 & 21 March 2010.
The session will open with a keynote by Erik Bäckman from YLE Audience Insight. Broadcasters say they know their audience; filmmakers and producers say they only know their ratings. In any case, YLE is still considered to be a haven for documentary filmmakers and viewers. Even here though, filmmakers need to understand their audience - who they are, what they look at and when. Bäckman will explain the new methods of audience research, not based on age or sex or where they live, but based on behaviour. Documentary is part of his analysis and you may be surprised by what he has discovered.
Hard to find but always needed, good funding is essential for documentary production. For years, broadcasters have been the main financial resource of 'independent' documentary films, but the times are changing. So what happens when money comes from other sources, like film funds, social institutions, NGOs or even corporations willing to support advocacy films? What are the strings attached to these resources? Generally, film funds and institutions invest, expecting financial or promotional returns. NGOs want to promote a campaign, and companies need to show a 'social' engagement. And then of course, the broadcasters want your film to win an audience for their channel and advertisers. In panel discussions and case studies experts like Greg Sanderson, Commissioning Executive at BBC Storyville, Claire Aguilar, Vice President of Programming at ITVS Independent Television Service, USA, Juha Rajamäki, The Secretary General of the Church Media Foundation, Finland, Andrew Buchanan, Freelance Executive Producer & Producer from the UK, who did a 130-part series in cooperation with Toyota, Heidi Gronauer, Director of ZeLIG, Italy and many more, will give an insight into the different alternative financing models.
Regional funds could be a solution to your financial gap, but are they happy to support any kind of topics? How promotional must you be? These questions will be answered on a panel with Enrico Jakob, Secretary General of CINESTYRIA Filmcommission and Fonds and Kurt Mayer from kurt mayer film.
Another case study together with Dr. Walter Köhler, Head of ORF UNIVERSUM, will be devoted to the very successful feature-documentary currently running in Austrian cinemas: Mount St. Elias. The film follows three of the world’s best ski mountaineers to Mount St. Elias in their attempt to realise the longest ski descent of the world – facing all the breathtaking challenges of a mountain.
Certainly, some institution still nurture documentary as an art form: the National Film Institutes, represented in Graz by Jakob Høgel, Artistic Director at the New Danish Screen (a collaboration between the Danish Film Institute and the two public broadcasters, Denmark’s Radio and TV2), some broadcasters, some specific and dedicated funds, and the web, where everyone can reach an audience.
But the rules of the game are changing, that's certain, and with the help of some of the most significant players in these different funding organizations, we will try to understand the demands we face so that we can adapt and thrive.
