3rd Symposium 2009
Documentaries: Secrets of Success
In documentaries what is the difference between the ordinary and the extraordinary? And what is the secret of success in making a truly great television documentary, or a really funny comedic documentary, or a documentary that is intended for theatrical distribution? Join this July’s Open Training Session to find answers to these questions.
On Friday, 3rd of July at 8.00 PM, we will open the weekend with a screening of the hilarious and powerful The Yes Men Fix The World – which won the audience award at this year’s Berlinale. It is the true story of two political pranksters who take on some of the USA’s most powerful corporations. You will meet its producer, Alan Hayling and co-director Andy Bichlbaum.
Director Anders Østergaard will tell you all the details of his acclaimed documentary Burma VJ. Armed with pocket-sized video cameras, a tenacious band of Burmese reporters face down death to expose the repressive regime controlling their country. The documentary won the Joris Ivens Award at IDFA 2008 and the World Cinema Documentary Editing Award at Sundance 2009.
With Tabitha Jackson from More 4/True Stories and Greg Sanderson from BBC Storyville we have two Commissioning Editors explaining us how they pick international projects for their prestigious strands and what happens when they are both interested in the same idea.
There will be sessions with Elizabeth Klinck from Toronto, one of the best researchers in the doc business, sharing most of her secrets with us and Jihan El Tahri, Egyptian-born filmmaker from France, who is a master in mixing rare archives with great interviews in her acclaimed contemporary history docs such as Behind the Rainbow, House of Saoud, Cuba’s African Odyssey.
Current Affairs aims to open viewers’ eyes to what is going on in the world. We will get an insight view about priorities and strategies of two of the most important public broadcasters in Europe with Fiona Campbell from the BBC, Hans Robert Eisenhauer from ZDF/ARTE and Alex Szalat from ARTE France.
In another panel, you can hear first-hand from Gonzalo Arijon, Uruguayan-born French filmmaker who did “Stranded: I’ve come from a plane that crashed in the mountains” – one of the most astonishing survival tales of all time. He shares with us all the details of a difficult and very challenging 4-year production and gives us a perspective of what can happen to a filmmaker after having made a very successful international film.
Channel 4’s commitment to broadcast serious science programmes with mass audience appeal was always high. David Glover, Head of Science, explains how he combines new trends and innovative ideas with brilliant filmmaking for his strand.
With our hosts from Greece we examine what qualities have helped Greek documentaries to be successful abroad, and what qualities have so far hindered them from travelling abroad or being sold to broadcasters. Kostas Spiropoulos, General Manager of News and Information of SKAI TV, Irene Gavala-Chardalia, Head of ERT's International Coproductions Department and filmmaker Kimon Tsakiris (Sugartown: the Bridegrooms) will share their views on this important panel.
