3rd Symposium 2003
Almost Real CGI and Visual Effects for Documentary Filmmaking
Strategies for Independent Producers
No documentary filmmaker can afford to ignore the impact of visual effects in documentary. The use of Computer Generated Images (CGI) has created new opportunities for storytelling across all genres, appealing to viewers from 5 to 105! This 3rd Open Training Session of Discovery Campus was aimed at demystifying this potentially ‘tricky’ field. Visual effects supervisors from The Mill, Framestore, Silver Animation and Meteor Studios showed us how they create their magic, discussed the challenges of working with documentary and advised how to integrate visual effects on lower budgets. Award winning producers Windfall Films, NHNZ (Natural History New Zealand) and NHK (Japan) presented case studies of their latest CGI productions. Executive producers and commissioning editors from BBC, Channel 4, Discovery Channel, NDR, ZDF and ProSieben debated the impact of CGI programming and future trends. “Almost Real” is your passport to the world of visual effects in documentary. A unique opportunity to discover how they can be used to enhance your story without consuming your budget - it was a chance to see some of this year’s Emmy nominations and congratulate the winners!
