Divorce Albanian Style - Best Bulgarian Doc 07
We have the pleasure to inform you that the film Divorce Albanian Style by director Adela Peeva (DCM 2003) was awarded the prize Best Bulgarian Documentary 2007. This annual prize for highest achievement in Bulgarian cinema is awarded by the Bulgarian National Film Centre. Congratulations!
Divorce Albanian Style is a story about love and separation, and takes place in the surreal world of 1960s communist Albania. Through the eyes of several people who experienced this period, the film tells the story of the many thousands of families that were forcibly separated by the totalitarian regime of Enver Hodja, the longest-serving European dictator of the 20th century. When in 1961 Albania broke off relations with the Soviet Union, Albanian men married to foreign women were forced by the state to split up with their wives, who were subsequently expelled. The official reason was alleged espionage.
