This is a workshop for European filmmakers with projects, who want to explore the possibilities of New Media for creation, production, financing, distribution…. Under the guidance of Franz Grabner (head of Culture at ORF), moderated by Anita Reher (European Documentary Network), assisted by experts like David Schalko (Superfilm), Frederick Baker (Media Europa), Stuart Veech (VMA)....
The media landscape is changing fundamentally - in front of our very eyes. Television itself is going through major changes. Will the television of the future still show documentaries, feature films and news reports the way it does today, or will storytelling, formats and the media as a whole undergo a complete metamorphosis? Who will be distributing what kind of content and programmes? That’s the question we’re confronted with today.
Most probably television as we know it will continue to exist. But already we see the emergence of a new media reality that brings with it new forms of storytelling and communicating that are more in tune with the 21st Century expectations of younger generations. My Space, Google, Facebook and so many more; those are the ideal media platforms to show stories and content as seen and created by the audience. The viewer makes his own programme and no longer needs conventional broadcasters.
What does this development mean for the filmmaker of the future? What role does he/she still have to play? Will filmmakers be forced to choose between conventional television and these new emerging formats? Everything is possible, there are no certainties anymore.
Communication through virtual space can have the effect of shifting our society into isolation and anonymity, whereas the visible presence of creative people within a culture leads to vitality and openmindedness. A delicate balance needs to be found. The media of tomorrow will be central to the choice that will be made; it will define the way society will develop.
The current changes are a challenge for all creative minds within the media. “The Second Wave“ offers an open platform for creative talents who want to tackle these new developments and use them in their work.
Franz Grabner (ORF) will be moderating the workshop, assisted by Anita Reher (European Documentary Network). Our experts are: David Schalko (Superfilm), Frederick Baker (Media Europa), Stuart Veech (VMA) and other creative people, soon to be confirmed. The final list of experts will be available soon. What they all have in common is that they have already taken the unconventional roads of the new media and communication and continue to search for new paths.
We cordially invite you to test your ideas with them, to challenge and to surprise them, to plunge head first into the new world of unlimited ideas and creative potential.
