DCM Participants Do ARTE Theme Evening

We are pleased to announce that two participants of the Discovery Campus Masterschool are involved in the upcoming ARTE theme evening on Monday, 30 July 2007. The theme evening on modern slavery will start off at 10.15 pm with Disposable People by Matthias Heeder and Monika Hielscher, who developed this documentary at the Masterschool 2003. At 11.20 pm ARTE will broadcast My own Master - The Story of Mende Nazer by Mareike Schomerus. Mareike is a participant of this year’s Masterschool, where she is currently developing another dedicated project about Sudan.

Disposable People is a documentary about modern time slavery, witchcraft and emotional healing. Two Nigerian brothers travel from their home village in former Biafra to Zindar in the South of Niger Republic. From here they start their search for the abductors who had sold the younger one into slavery some years ago. To find and to confront his former slave-masters promises emotional and spiritual relief. The latter is connected to his and his family's belief that charm/black magic initially had put a spell on him which is still lasting.

Mende Nazer’s autobiography Slave has been a best-selling book in many countries worldwide. It relates the story of a young Sudanese woman who says that she escaped from a life in slavery. Filmmaker Mareike Schomerus, who has covered Mende Nazer's life since her escape seven years ago, shows the many pitfalls Mende Nazer is facing on her way to so-called freedom: she is denied political asylum, and accused of being a liar by the Sudanese diplomat in whose London townhouse she was working. An action of slander ensues. Is there a happy ending to Mende Nazer’s story? Will she ever see her family again?
