To be at home, to feel like home, being in your home country are different perceptions of “home”. You can make yourself at home in many places. Sooner or later, you will adapt your own habits to the regional specifics. Formerly alien faces and places will soon look familiar. You get accustomed to a place and consider it your new home. But is “feeling home” the same as being at home? Is it the same feeling, as you would have in your home country? Home is something unique, something deeply rooted in your memory and emotions. Maybe, it is a place we only discover after we left home and start to miss it dearly. Home often implies homesickness, doesn’t it? “Here is the place, where it would never cross anyone’s mind to call me strange or odd”, says Peter Camenzind, the hero in Hermann Hesse’s first novel, upon returning home after having travelled abroad for several years. The term “home” is profound and ambiguous – a very good reason to watch some films and see how documentary filmmakers convey their idea of home country, home and being at home!
In pictures and memories, you feel, hear, taste, even smell your home. This year’s Dok- Film-Forum will go on that multi-sensory journey. We will follow the filmmakers into very different homes. Sometimes lightly, invisibly, other times very concretely, they explore all the changeable dimensions that are hidden between Home and at home.
