Documentary meets Animation. In a new and exciting collaboration with the Animation Production Day, the MFG Filmfund Baden-Württemberg and the Creative Europe Desk Munich, Documentary Campus invites doc-professionals to explore the new business field of animated documentaries (AnimaDocs).
Together with Annegret Richter, Managing Director of the German AG Animationsfilm we are going to present three exceptional case-studies that are standing for successful AnimaDocs. Our speakers will discuss the potentials and pitfalls of AnimaDoc production from both documentary and animated film perspectives.

ITFS Workshop: Animated Reality - The challenges of the animated documentary

Documentaries and animated films are rarely combined, although there’s an increase of interest from producers and audiences. Jan-Dirk Bouw’s seminar offers participants the opportunity to become familiar with the possibilities to connect the genres. By illustrating two case studies he will reflect on the challenges of this hybridization form. After showing his animated documentary ‘I love Hooligans’ he will address artistic choices, production, workflow and talk about his latest project ‘Breaking Walls’.

Luna Petunia (TV series)
LUNA PETUNIA is a new animated Netflix original series for preschoolers, inspired by a Cirque du Soleil stage show. It’s the first TV co-production from Saban Brands and Cirque du Soleil Media. The project will be presented by screenwriter Eric Shaw and John Hardman, Vice President of Development and Production for Saban Brands, who will focus on production and the creative challenges of turning a worldwide stage show into a streaming TV series.

Over the Garden Wall (Mini series)
OVER THE GARDEN WALL is an Emmy Award-winning mini series by Cartoon Network that will be presented by award-winning Canadian producer Nick Cross. For almost twenty years, he has been directing and producing animated content for various film and television productions. Cross will give an insight into his role as an art director both for the series and for the Cartoon Network’s shorts development programme.

Another Day of Live (AnimaDoc feature)
The producers of the feature film share challenges faced in a European coproduction with animation and documentary aspects. The film about the famous war photographer Ryszard Kapuściński deals with his experiences during the Angolan Civil War in 1975. In Partnership with Documentary Campus.

Wider Horizon (TV feature)
This 30-minute short film made for German television deals with the memories of an East German family vacation at the Baltic Sea back in 1987. The producer, director and commissioner at MDR will discuss how they rose to the challenge making a fully animated documentary for German television.

Cuentos de Viejos (TV series, App)
In the animated multimedia series, older people tell their childhood stories to a young audience in order to keep history alive. The episodes of five minutes, were screened at public tv in Columbia and made available online.
